Open Source

Today in class we talked about open source software and how it is essentially free software. I found today's topic interesting because it shows how anybody can download the software and make changes to it. I did not realize that it was so prevalent in today's world. For example, I was unaware that Firefox is open source, and I found that to be very interesting because I am a user of Firefox. Hopefully, that doesn't mean I am a 'free rider' because I do not make any modifications.

Also, I did enjoy the reference to The Office today in class because I am a big fan of the show.

Hey Patrick,
The thing I was wondering about open source was just how worth it is it for company's to make their software open source. Then I came across an article about open source online. The article stated that one of the reasons it is worth it for the company is because they cut a lot of their research and development time and money down by essentially getting someone else to work on it for them for free. Then they can trun around and offer customer service to less technologically savy people, such as myself, for a price.
