Final Posts

With these final posts I have made today I have now completed all the required class work. I hope my posts have been interesting to those of you that have read them and I hope I was able to provide some interesting information.

I found this course very entertaining and useful. Hopefully, I will see some of you in the future but if not, good luck and God bless.

Employers' Google Search

I have just come across a blog Lydia made about an article linked from John Battlelle's blog. The artocle discusses a ruling that was made that makes Google background checks okay. It states that it is a valid way of obtaining information on prospective employees.

I found this article very interesting becuase it really shows how almost everything can now be obtained through the use of the internet. Even if someone doesn't use the internet, their information can still be found there. This makes for both a very interesting and scary new world.

Philadelphia Eagles Summary

For my final Wikipedia article, I edited the Philadelphia Eagles Wikipedia page. I was unable to have as much success with this article finding content as I had with the others so I had to make mostly grammatical changes. However, I was still able to add some content.

The first and second revisions I made to the page both had to deal with grammatical changes. Here, I removed words that made sentences confusing and I also corrected punctuation. As far as I know, all of these changes I have made have stayed intact.

The third revision I made to the page was to the popular culture section. In the paragraph talking about Vince Papale, I added that he played three seasons for the Eagles playing special teams and wide receiver. This content still remains.

Philadelphia Phillies Summary

Throughout the course I have also been editing the Philadelphia Phillies Wikipedia page. In it I have made three revisions to the page all in the section referring to the 2007 Phillies. For my first post, I added content where I said Jon Lieber will be moving to the bullpen where he is expected to add much needed relief. Lieber, since then has moved back into the starting rotation so this content was removed.

With my second revision, I rearranged the sentence talking about the Phillies pitching so that it would make more sense. This was mostly a grammar edit. This content still remains but there have been a few revisions to the sentence itself.

For my final revision, I added that the Phillies first reached the .500 mark for the first time all season with a record of 20-20. This content, also, still remains.

Scrubs Wikipedia Summary

For my second article, I chose to edit the Scrubs Wikipedia page. Here, I did not have much success. I was able to add a lot of content but it has all been removed by other users. I guess that is the price you pay for editing a popular article.

For my first edit, I combined the last two bullet points of the trivia section into one bullet point. For my second edit, I added that the character, The Janitor, may finally be given an actual name on the show. Finally, for my third edit, I once again added to the trivia section where I wrote about how the picture on Ted's desk was in actuality the actors real life mother.

Zach Braff Summary

Throughout the course I have been editing Zach Braff's Wikipedia page. For my first post I added content referring to how he has stated he knows nothing about music yet has won a Grammy award for his work on Garden State. My original post is mostly there but the part where I added where he stated this on Last Call with Carson Daly has been moved to the reference section.

I also added content on how he now makes as much as Two and A Half Men star Charlie Sheen after the restructuring of his contract. This content still remains.

For my final post, I added he was the voice of Chicken Little in the movie, Chicken Little, into the quick bio box. This content also still remains.

Final Eagles Edit

I made my final revision to the Philadelphia Eagles Wikipedia page earlier today. In it I edited the Eagles in popular culture section. In the paragraph talking about Vince Papale I added that he played three seasons for the Eagles playing special teams and wide receiver.

Thus concludes my Wikipedia entries.

National Lampoon Network

Today, I read an article from Global Neighbourhoods entitled, "National Lampoon Launches Online Video Network." This article really interested me because I am a big fan of National Lampoon movies and comedy sketches. The article was basically just a press release stating that the company will be featuring this network but I still found it interesting. I look forward to watching videos on this network.

Final Phillies Edit

For my final Philadelphia Phillies Wikipedia edit, I chose to edit the 2007 section of the page. Here, I added that the Phillies finally reached the .500 mark for the first time this season with a record of 20-20. I am glad after a few posts of only grammar edits, I finally received a chance to add some real content to one of my articles.

Second Phillies Edit

I know this is my fourth post in a row concerning Wikipedia but it must be done. I have just updated the Phillies page by removing content in the 2007 Phillies section. With my first post I added that Jon Lieber was expected to add much needed relief in the bullpen. However, since then Lieber has moved into the starting rotation but the content I added was still there. So, I removed that and rearranged the sentence so that it would make more sense.

I'll be sure to be back next week with some none Wikipedia material.

Second Eagles Wikipedia Edit

Today I made my second revision to the Philadelphia Eagles Wikipedia page. In this edit I corrected a few grammar mistakes. I placed a comma where it was missing and removed some words which made certain sentences confusing. I'm hoping to add real content soon.

Final Zach Braff Edit

I have also just completed my final Zach Braff Wikipedia edit. In this edit I tried something different and added information to the quick bio box on the right. Here, I added to the notables section and said Braff was also the voice of, Chicken Little, in the movie, "Chicken Little."

Final Scrubs Edit

I have just completed my final Scrubs Wikipedia edit. In this edit I once again added trivia. This time I added the fact that the character, Ted, has a picture of his mother in his office. In actuality, the woman portrayed is the real life mother of actor Sam Lloyd.

Second Scrubs Wikipedia Edit

In seeing that the semester is quickly coming to a close I thought it wise to make another Wikipedia edit in seeing I have not done so in a while. So, today I made my second edit to the Scrubs page. In this edit, I added to the trivia section where I wrote about how the producer of the show, Bill Lawrence, may eventually place a name to one of the leading characters, The Janitor, in the series finale. To date, that is how he is known on the show yet has used the name Dr. Jan Itor on occassion.

HostMySite.com

Today in class, we listened to the CEO of HostMySite.com, Lou Honick. HostMySite is a web hosting service provider for personal or business web hosting. The company prides itself on its customer service which is open 24 x 7 x 365. I found today's presentation very interesting in seeing how the company grew from just two people to around 170 employees. The fact that the company was able to get off the ground as basically a part time service is fascinating as well.

It is always pretty cool listening about a success story and what makes it even better is that the founder graduated from the University of Delaware. I always enjoy listening to guest speakers and hope to hear more in class.

DealCatcher

In class today we listened to Dan Baxter, the founder of DealCatcher. DealCatcher is an online community that helps shoppers save money and make educated purchases. On the site you can find online coupons, products, sales, reviews, and rebates.

I found the presentation to be extremely interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to how the site was founded and how it was able to take off. I thought the presentation related to class quite well by touching on class topics such as price discrimination and word of mouth marketing. I especially enjoyed the customer complaint call, I found that particularly amusing. The free t-shirt was also a nice gift.

Eagles Wikipedia Edit

Today I made my first edit to the Philadelphia Eagles Wikipedia page. Reading through the Eagles page I noticed some grammatical errors so I decided to fix them. I know it's small but it still counts as adding content. In the future, I hope to add more substance to the page but for now I guess this will have to do.

Stiuqxela Experiment

I have just realized that my page comes up on Google (thanks in part to Professor Brown telling me in class) when you type in the search word stiuqxela. In seeing that it now does I should explain what the term means. Stiuqxela, is a made up word that links to the Green Bay Packers website. For class experimental purposes we are blogging the word and watching how the different search engines, especially Google, react.

Open Source

Today in class we talked about open source software and how it is essentially free software. I found today's topic interesting because it shows how anybody can download the software and make changes to it. I did not realize that it was so prevalent in today's world. For example, I was unaware that Firefox is open source, and I found that to be very interesting because I am a user of Firefox. Hopefully, that doesn't mean I am a 'free rider' because I do not make any modifications.

Also, I did enjoy the reference to The Office today in class because I am a big fan of the show.

If You're Not Interested Don't Listen

Earlier today I came across an article on Modern Marketing entitled, "If You're Not Interested Don't Listen." The article explains how Dell recently launched IdeaStorm, a site designed to collect ideas and views from the public. Then a funny thing happened, 135,000 people all suggested that pre-installed Linux or OpenOffice machines would be a great perk. Dell initally agreed, however, once the company looked into it they realised it wasn't feasible and had to ignore all of the requests. In a statement, Dell stated that it wouldn't be able to meet the demands because customers want too many variants.

Although I feel this was initially a great idea from Dell I do believe they screwed up by saying they would oblige to requests before they actually looked into the situation. I feel Dell is doing a good thing by reaching out to its customers and taking their suggestions but they should also make it known that not all requests are feasible. I hope that Dell continues with their 'suggestion box' because I feel it could definitely be a very strong and effective marketing tool.

Phillies Wikipedia Edit

Today I made my first Wikipedia edit for the Philadelphia Phillies. In the 2007 section, I added the fact that Jon Lieber, one of the Phillies starting pitchers last season, has moved to the bullpen and is expected to add much needed relief.

Local TV: What's On(line)?

As I was reading over my teammate, Mike's blog, I came across an interesting article he wrote about. The article focuses on the importance of local news stations and the use of their websites. I found it very interesting that ads on the TV stations are just as effective, if not more effective, than the ads that run on television. It is an excellent example of how the Internet has had such a great impact on the marketing world.

Also, the article talks about how these websites offer career pages, horoscopes, and lists of community events. In being that most of the readers are in the stations geographical area, the websites can prove to be more useful than the actual television program.

An example of a TV stations network news website is, NBC10.com. This station offers news to the Philadelphia region.

Scrubs Wikipedia Edit

Earlier today I made my first Wikipedia edit for the television show Scrubs. In it, I combined the last two bullet points of the trivia section into the bullet point immendiately preceeding them. I felt the information was best served as one complete bullet point rather than three separate ones.

VALS Survey

Last week in class we discussed the VALS Survey. This popular online survey explores the relationship between personality traits and consumer behavior and businesses often use it to identify target customers. Businesses also use the survey as a tool to discover what type of personality an employee or prospective employee may have.

The survey takes about five minutes to complete and consists of about forty questions asking about your preferences. After completing the survey it said that I was an Experiencer/Innovator.

Sea Creatures and Electronics

I just read an interesting article on Slashdot about how sea creatures could possibly provide the basis for new electronics. The article says that the shells of the the tiny sea creatures may help to lay the foundation for new electronic devices including an improved pollution detector. Scientists would use a chemical process that converts the shells into the semiconductor material silicon. The newly converted shells could then be useful as battery electrodes or chemical purifiers.

I find this article interesting because it really shows how nature can be just as effective a producer, if not more so, than humans.

Second Wikipedia Edit

Earlier today I made my second wikipedia edit to Zach Braff's page. Upon reading on CNN.com that Zach Braff had just reached a contract settlement with his TV show "Scrubs," I decided to post what I read on Wikipedia. When I saw the site, however, I saw someone had already added this new information but did not add the other actors who were making as much money as Braff is set to. So, I added the fact that Charlie Sheen also makes within the $350,000 range on his show, "Two and A Half Men."

NBA Partners with YouTube

I just read an article about how the NBA has paired with YouTube to create an all new NBA channel that will feature fans showing off their skills. As part of the channels launch, they are encouraging viewers to post videos of themselves on the basketball court. The NBA is hoping, by doing this, they will help promote national telecasts of NBA programming and further drive traffic to their site, NBA.com.

My First Wikipedia Edit

I just made my first Wikipedia edit by adding content to the Zach Braff page. The content I added was based off an interview I saw with Braff when he appeared on a late night television program, Last Call with Carson Daly. In this post I commented on the fact that Braff claims to "know nothing about music," even though he has won a Grammy, for the Garden State soundtrack, and has directed three music videos. In the article, I also linked the words, Grammy Award, Scrubs, and Last Call with Carson Daly.
